www.mass.gov/orgs/green-communities-division A Mass. city or town must meet 5 criteria to become a Green Community: 1. As-of-right siting for renewable energy; 2. Expedited permitting for renewable energy; 3. A 20% energy reduction plan; 4. Purchase only fuel-efficient vehicles; and 5. Adopt the Mass. stretch energy code. As of early 2023 nearly 300 of the state’s 351 cities and towns have become certified Green Communities.
